Bodybuilding Divisions Explained: Classic Physique, Men's Physique, Bikini, Wellness, and More

Bodybuilding isn't one competition. It's a family of divisions, each with its own ideal physique. "Classic bodybuilding," "open bodybuilding," "bikini bodybuilding," "figure bodybuilding" and "wellness bodybuilding" are all among the top bodybuilding searches, and "women's bodybuilding" grew 170% last year.

This guide explains every major division: what judges reward, what's worn, how posing differs, and how to choose the right one for your physique.

Criteria vary between federations (e.g. IFBB/NPC, natural federations). Always read your federation's current division rules.

The short answer

Division Muscle size Conditioning Key look
Men's Open Bodybuilding Maximum Extreme Size, density, separation
Classic Physique High (weight capped by height) Very high Golden-era aesthetics, small waist
Men's Physique Moderate High (upper body) Beach-ready V-taper, board shorts
Women's Bodybuilding Maximum (for women) Extreme Size and separation
Women's Physique High Very high Muscular, athletic
Figure Moderate–high High Wide shoulders, small waist, V-taper
Wellness Moderate, lower-body emphasis Moderate–high Developed glutes and legs
Bikini Lowest Moderate Toned, balanced, athletic

Men's divisions

Open Bodybuilding

The original division: as much muscle as possible, with symmetry, proportion and extreme conditioning. Competitors perform mandatory poses (front double biceps, side chest, back lat spread, most muscular and so on) and a free posing routine. The Mr. Olympia Open title is the sport's most famous prize.

Classic Physique

Created to bring back the golden-era look of the 1970s. Think Arnold-era proportions (see the Arnold split). Classic Physique uses height-to-weight caps, so competitors can't simply get as big as possible. Judges want a small waist, full muscle bellies, flowing lines and classic poses, including the vacuum. Competitors wear shorts-style trunks rather than posing briefs.

Men's Physique

The most popular entry division. Competitors wear board shorts, so legs aren't judged. Judges focus on the upper body: shoulders, lats, chest, arms, abs and a tight waist, plus stage presence. Posing is a front pose, a back pose and a transition walk.

Women's divisions

Women's divisions: least to most muscular Bikini Wellness Figure Physique Bodybuilding
Relative muscularity expected on stage. Exact criteria vary by federation.

Bikini

The largest women's division. Judges reward an athletic, balanced, toned physique with some muscle and moderate conditioning, not visible striations. Presentation matters a lot: the model walk, poise and confidence.

Wellness

Similar muscle levels to Bikini up top, but much more lower-body development: bigger glutes and thighs. It was created for women whose natural build carries more muscle in the legs and glutes.

Figure

A V-taper: wide shoulders and lats, small waist, visible muscle separation without extreme size. Posing uses quarter turns.

Women's Physique

More muscular and conditioned than Figure, with mandatory poses and a routine, but less size than Women's Bodybuilding.

Women's Bodybuilding

The most muscular women's division: maximum size, density and conditioning, with full mandatory poses and a routine.

Posing and presentation, compared

Division Attire Posing
Open Bodybuilding Posing trunks Mandatory poses + routine
Classic Physique Trunk-style shorts Classic mandatory poses (incl. vacuum) + routine
Men's Physique Board shorts Front, back, transitions
Bikini / Wellness Two-piece suit, heels Front, back, model walk
Figure Two-piece suit, heels Quarter turns
Women's Physique / Bodybuilding Two-piece posing suit Mandatory poses + routine

Posing is a skill. Most competitors practise daily for months. A well-posed physique can outplace a better one that's poorly presented.

Natural divisions

Tested federations run the same divisions with drug testing. If you're drug-free, a natural federation is a fairer playing field. See our natural bodybuilding guide and competition prep guide.

How to choose your division

If your physique… Consider
Carries a lot of muscle everywhere Open (men) / Physique or Bodybuilding (women)
Has a small waist and full, classic proportions Classic Physique
Has strong upper body, less leg development Men's Physique
Is athletic and balanced with moderate muscle Bikini
Carries muscle in glutes and legs Wellness
Has wide shoulders, small waist, visible muscle Figure

Ask a coach or experienced competitor to assess your physique honestly, and watch a local show before you commit.

Training for your division

Every division is built on the same basics: progressive overload, enough weekly volume and a solid diet. What changes is emphasis: Men's Physique prioritises shoulders, lats and arms; Wellness prioritises glutes and legs; Classic prioritises overall balance and a small waist. For a general base, start with our beginner bodybuilding program or the women's bodybuilding guide.

The bottom line

Bodybuilding divisions range from Bikini and Men's Physique (moderate muscle, strong presentation) to Classic Physique (golden-era aesthetics with weight caps) to Open Bodybuilding (maximum muscle). Pick the one that suits your natural build, learn its posing, and train with the right emphasis.

Frequently asked questions

What is Classic Physique in bodybuilding?

Classic Physique is a men's division rewarding golden-era aesthetics — a small waist, full muscle bellies and classic poses — with height-to-weight caps that prevent competitors from simply getting as big as possible.

What is the difference between Men's Physique and Classic Physique?

Men's Physique competitors wear board shorts and are judged mainly on the upper body and V-taper with simple poses. Classic Physique judges the whole body including legs, uses mandatory classic poses and has weight caps.

What is the difference between Bikini and Wellness?

Both reward a toned, athletic look, but Wellness expects significantly more lower-body and glute development than Bikini.

Which bodybuilding division is best for beginners?

Men's Physique and Bikini are the most popular first divisions because they require the least muscle mass, though presentation and posing still matter a lot.
