A simple up-and-down movement of the shoulders while holding a loaded barbell, isolating the upper trapezius.
How to do it
- Stand holding a barbell in front of your thighs with an overhand grip, feet hip-width apart.
- Keep your arms straight throughout the movement.
- Elevate your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as you can.
- Hold the top position briefly, squeezing the traps.
- Lower under control back to the starting position without rolling your shoulders.
Coaching tips
- Move straight up and down — rolling the shoulders forward or back adds no benefit and can irritate the joint.
- Use lifting straps if grip fails before your traps do.
- A slightly heavier, controlled shrug beats a bouncy, momentum-driven one.
Common mistakes
- Bending the elbows to help lift the weight, which takes tension off the traps.
- Rolling the shoulders in a circular motion instead of a straight vertical shrug.
Frequently asked questions
Do shrugs work the whole trapezius?
Shrugs mainly target the upper traps. Rows and pull-ups do more for the mid and lower traps, so combine them for full development.
