Calves

A calf raise performed standing in a machine that adds resistance across the shoulders, allowing heavier loading than bodyweight calf raises.

How to do it

  1. Position yourself in the standing calf raise machine with the pads resting on your shoulders.
  2. Place the balls of your feet on the platform, heels hanging off the edge.
  3. Rise up onto your toes as high as possible, squeezing your calves.
  4. Pause briefly at the top of the movement.
  5. Lower your heels back down under control for a full stretch at the bottom.

Coaching tips

  • Use a full range of motion — a deep stretch at the bottom and a full rise at the top.
  • Move with control rather than bouncing, which reduces the training effect.
  • Calves tend to respond well to higher rep ranges — don't be afraid to go past 15 reps per set.

Common mistakes

  • Using a short range of motion that doesn't fully stretch or contract the calf.
  • Bouncing at the bottom to move more weight instead of a controlled tempo.

Frequently asked questions

Why are calves so hard to grow?

Calves are used to constant low-level activity from walking, making them resistant to growth. Higher volume, full range of motion and progressive overload over time are key.
