A squat performed holding a single dumbbell against your chest, a beginner-friendly and home-gym-friendly way to build proper squat mechanics.
How to do it
- Hold a dumbbell vertically against your chest with both hands cupping the top end.
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out.
- Push your hips back and bend your knees to squat down, keeping your elbows inside your knees.
- Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor.
- Drive through your heels to stand back up, keeping the dumbbell close to your chest throughout.
Coaching tips
- The front-loaded weight naturally encourages an upright torso, making this a great teaching tool for squat form.
- Keep your elbows brushing the inside of your knees at the bottom for an extra mobility cue.
- One of the easiest squat variations to set up at home with a single dumbbell or kettlebell.
Common mistakes
- Letting the dumbbell drift away from the chest, pulling the torso forward.
- Rushing through the bottom position instead of controlling the descent.
Frequently asked questions
Is the goblet squat good for beginners?
Yes — it's often the first squat variation coaches teach because the front-loaded weight naturally promotes good posture and depth.
