Calves
A standing calf exercise performed holding dumbbells, raising onto the toes to target the calf muscles.
How to do it
- Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet hip-width apart.
- Optionally stand with the balls of your feet on a raised platform for extra range of motion.
- Rise up onto your toes as high as possible, squeezing your calves at the top.
- Pause briefly at the top of the movement.
- Lower your heels back down under control, feeling a full stretch at the bottom.
Coaching tips
- A raised platform under your toes adds extra range of motion and a deeper stretch.
- Slow, controlled reps work the calves better than fast, bouncy ones.
- Calves respond well to higher rep ranges — don't be afraid to push past 15 reps.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing at the bottom instead of a controlled stretch and squeeze.
- Using a range of motion that's too short to fully challenge the muscle.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my calves grow?
Calves often respond best to higher volume, full range of motion, and controlled tempo — many lifters undertrain them by rushing through short, bouncy reps.
