Muscles worked
Glute medius, Outer hips
A resistance-band exercise that moves the leg outward against band tension, targeting the outer hip and glute muscles.
How to do it
- Place a small resistance band around your ankles or just above your knees.
- Stand with feet hip-width apart, maintaining tension on the band.
- Shift your weight onto one leg and lift the other leg out to the side against the band's resistance.
- Pause briefly, then return to the starting position under control.
- Complete all reps on one side before switching legs.
Coaching tips
- Keep your standing leg slightly bent and your torso upright throughout.
- Move slowly — this exercise is about targeted muscle activation, not speed.
- Great for warming up the hips before squats or as a home-gym glute finisher.
Common mistakes
- Leaning the torso to help lift the leg instead of isolating the hip.
- Using a band too light to create meaningful resistance.
Frequently asked questions
Why train hip abduction specifically?
The outer hip muscles support knee and hip stability during squats and running — direct training can help with both aesthetics and injury prevention.
