Muscles worked

Triceps

A cable triceps exercise performed overhead with a rope attachment, stretching the long head of the triceps more than pushdown variations.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing away from a low cable pulley with a rope attachment, gripping one end in each hand.
  2. Position the rope behind your head with your elbows bent, upper arms pointing forward.
  3. Extend your arms forward and up until they're fully straight.
  4. Squeeze your triceps at full extension.
  5. Return to the starting position under control, feeling a stretch in the triceps.

Coaching tips

  • Keep your upper arms still and close to your head throughout the movement.
  • The overhead position stretches the long head of the triceps, which pushdowns train less directly.
  • Lean slightly forward for stability, but avoid using your whole body to move the weight.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the elbows flare out wide instead of staying close to the head.
  • Using too much weight and shortening the range of motion.

Frequently asked questions

Why train triceps overhead instead of just pushdowns?

The overhead position puts the long head of the triceps in a stretched position, which research suggests contributes more to muscle growth than pushdown-only training.
