Muscles worked

Biceps, Forearms

The classic biceps builder — a strict curl performed with a straight barbell, letting you overload the biceps with more weight than dumbbells typically allow.

How to do it

  1. Stand holding a barbell with an underhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart.
  2. Keep your elbows pinned to your sides throughout the movement.
  3. Curl the bar up toward your shoulders, squeezing your biceps at the top.
  4. Lower the bar back down under control to full arm extension.
  5. Avoid swinging your hips or leaning back to move the weight.

Coaching tips

  • Keep your elbows fixed — letting them drift forward turns this into a shoulder exercise.
  • A slight pause at the top of each rep increases biceps tension.
  • Use a weight you can lift with strict form; swinging the bar reduces the muscle-building effect.

Common mistakes

  • Using body momentum ("curling with the hips") instead of the biceps.
  • Only completing a partial range of motion at the top.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a straight or EZ bar for curls?

An EZ bar's angled grip is easier on the wrists; a straight bar allows a more natural supinated grip. Both build the biceps effectively.
