CrossFit Open Guide: How It Works, the 2026 Workouts (26.1–26.3), and How to Prepare

The CrossFit Open produced the biggest "breakout" searches in CrossFit this year: "open 2026 CrossFit," "CrossFit 26.1," "26.2," "26.3" and more, with "CrossFit Games 2026" up about 4,000%. For three weeks each year, a large share of the fitness world does the same workouts and compares scores.

This guide explains how the Open works, recaps the 2026 workouts, and shows you how to prepare for the next one, whether you're aiming for Rx or doing your first scaled Open.

The short answer

  • What: an annual online competition, the first stage of the CrossFit Games season.
  • When: usually late February to March, one new workout per week for 3 weeks.
  • Who: anyone. Register, do the workout at a gym (or film it), and submit your score.
  • Divisions: Rx (prescribed), Scaled, Foundations (in recent years), plus age groups and adaptive divisions.
  • Workout names: year + number. "26.1" is the first workout of the 2026 Open.

How the Open works

  1. Register on the CrossFit Games site and choose your division.
  2. A workout is released each week, usually on a Thursday evening (US time).
  3. You complete it within the scoring window (typically a few days), at an affiliate with a judge or by filming it.
  4. Submit your score, which ranks you worldwide, by country, by age group and at your gym.
  5. Top finishers advance to later stages toward the CrossFit Games.

For most participants it isn't about qualifying. It's a yearly fitness benchmark and a chance to try something hard alongside hundreds of thousands of others.

The 2026 CrossFit Open workouts: a recap

Workout Movements (Rx) Time cap What it tested
26.1 Ascending/descending sets of wall-ball shots alternating with box jump-overs and medicine-ball box step-overs (including a 66-rep wall-ball set in the middle) 12 min Leg and lung endurance, pacing
26.2 3 rounds of dumbbell overhead walking lunges and alternating dumbbell snatches, with pulling that escalated from pull-ups to chest-to-bar to ring muscle-ups 15 min Legs under load, gymnastics capacity
26.3 High-volume burpees combined with a barbell ladder of cleans and thrusters increasing in weight Time cap per the official standards Barbell cycling under fatigue, grit

Summarised from CrossFit's official announcements. For exact reps, loads and scaled standards, see the official workout pages on games.crossfit.com.

A pattern across all three: legs and pacing. Two of the three hammered the lower body with wall balls, box work and lunges, then added gymnastics or barbell work on top.

Rx vs Scaled vs Foundations

Division Who it's for Typical adjustments
Rx Experienced athletes who can do every movement at the prescribed load None
Scaled Most everyday CrossFitters Lighter loads, simpler gymnastics (e.g. jumping pull-ups)
Foundations Beginners, older athletes, those returning from injury Simplest movements and loads

Pick the division where you can move well. A scaled score done properly beats a messy Rx attempt, and it's much safer.

How to prepare for the next Open

The Open rewards broad fitness, meaning no big weaknesses. Use the months beforehand to find and fix yours.

1. Test the common movements

Recent Opens have relied on a familiar set: wall balls, box jumps and step-overs, burpees, toes-to-bar, pull-ups and chest-to-bar, double-unders, dumbbell snatches and lunges, thrusters, cleans, rowing and bike calories. Rate yourself on each:

Movement Can do unbroken sets of… Priority
Wall balls ___
Toes-to-bar ___
Double-unders ___
Chest-to-bar pull-ups ___
Thrusters (Rx load) ___

The lowest numbers are your training focus.

2. Build your engine

Most Open workouts are 8–20 minutes long, which is squarely aerobic. Add 1–2 conditioning sessions a week: rowing or bike intervals, metcon workouts, or longer steady efforts.

3. Get stronger

Heavier ladder workouts (like 26.3's barbell ladder) reward raw strength. If your clean or thruster max is close to the prescribed loads, every rep becomes a grinder. Building your squat and clean with progressive overload makes those weights feel lighter.

4. Practise pacing

Most Open disasters come from going too fast in the first 2–3 minutes. Practise breaking big sets into planned chunks (e.g. 66 wall balls as 20-16-15-15) before you're tired.

5. Re-do past Open workouts

Past Open workouts are published, so they're perfect practice. Do one every week or two in the months before the Open, and record your score and how you split the reps.

Open week strategy

  • Watch the release and plan your splits.
  • Warm up specifically. Do a few reps of every movement at the workout weight.
  • Do the workout early in the window, and redo it later if you want (many athletes do).
  • Film your attempt or use a judge, so your score is valid.
  • Recover. Three hard tests in three weeks is a lot. Keep other training light.

Track your Open numbers year to year

The Open is best used as an annual benchmark. Record your scores, your division and the maxes behind them, like your clean, thruster and unbroken wall balls, so you can compare next year.

GymMonster logs your strength work set by set with personal records for every lift, giving you a clear picture of the numbers behind your Open performance.

The bottom line

The CrossFit Open is a three-week, worldwide online competition that anyone can enter. 2026's workouts (26.1–26.3) focused heavily on legs, pacing and barbell cycling. Pick the division where you move well, spend the year fixing your weakest movements and building your engine and strength, and treat each Open as a yearly checkpoint.
