Barbell Plate Calculator
Type the weight you want on the bar and get the plates for each side, heaviest first, with a picture of the loaded bar. Tell it which plates your gym has, and it finds the closest load when the exact number isn’t possible. Switch to reverse mode to add up a bar that is already loaded.
Available plates
Tick the plates your gym has and set how many pairs (one per side) are available.
Load on each side
2 × 45 lb
Total on the bar: 225 lb · 2 plates per side · Exact match
How to use the plate calculator
- Pick kg or lb, then choose your bar (or enter a custom bar weight).
- Enter the total weight you want to lift.
- Untick any plates your gym doesn’t have, and set how many pairs there are.
- Load the plates shown for each side, heaviest on the inside. Add collars if you use them.
Worked example
You want 275 lb on a 45 lb bar. Take the bar away and 115 lb is left for each side once you split it in half.
With standard plates that is 2 × 45 lb + 25 lb on each side. If your gym is out of one size, untick it and the calculator rebuilds the load from what is left — or shows the closest weight you can make.
How plate math works
Plates per side = (target − bar − collars) ÷ 2. Then load the heaviest plates that fit, working down to the small ones.
Your smallest pair of plates sets the finest jump you can make: 1.25 kg plates give 2.5 kg steps, 2.5 lb plates give 5 lb steps. Change plates (0.5 kg, 0.25 kg, 1.25 lb) allow smaller jumps.
When stock is limited, heaviest-first doesn’t always work, so the calculator searches every combination of the plates you have and picks the one with the fewest plates.
Assumptions and limits
Bars and plates are assumed to weigh exactly what they are labelled. Real equipment can be slightly off, and many specialty or technique bars weigh less — check the marking on your bar.
Always load both sides evenly, keep the heaviest plates on the inside and use collars for anything heavy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out which plates to put on the bar?
Subtract the bar (and collars, if you count them) from your target, divide by two, and fill each side with the heaviest plates that fit. The calculator does this for you and checks your plate inventory.
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard men’s Olympic bar weighs 20 kg (about 44 lb) and a women’s bar 15 kg (about 33 lb). Many gyms in the US use 45 lb and 35 lb bars. Technique, EZ and specialty bars vary, so check your bar.
Do collars count toward the total weight?
Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each and are counted in powerlifting and weightlifting. Light spring clips are usually ignored. Tick “Use collars” and set their weight if you want them included.
Why can’t I load my exact target weight?
Your smallest pair of plates limits the jumps you can make — with 1.25 kg plates every load is a multiple of 2.5 kg above the bar. The calculator then shows the nearest lighter and heavier loads instead.
Should I put the heaviest plates on first?
Yes. Heaviest plates go on the inside, closest to the lifter, with smaller plates outside. It keeps the bar balanced, uses fewer plates and makes the weight easy to check.
Does it work with both kg and lb plates?
Yes. Switch the unit and the calculator uses the matching bar and plate sizes. Avoid mixing kg and lb plates on the same bar unless you account for the difference.
