Obliques
A standing exercise that bends the torso sideways while holding a dumbbell, isolating the obliques on one side at a time.
How to do it
- Stand holding a dumbbell in one hand at your side, feet shoulder-width apart.
- Keep your torso facing forward and your free hand behind your head or on your hip.
- Bend sideways at the waist, lowering the dumbbell toward your knee.
- Return to upright by contracting the obliques on the working side.
- Complete all reps on one side before switching.
Coaching tips
- Keep the movement in the frontal plane — avoid twisting your torso forward or backward.
- Use lighter weight than you'd expect; this is an isolation move, not a strength-building compound lift.
- Some lifters skip heavy loading here out of concern for adding waist bulk — light-to-moderate weight for higher reps is a common approach.
Common mistakes
- Twisting the torso instead of bending purely sideways.
- Using momentum to swing back to standing instead of controlled oblique contraction.
Frequently asked questions
Will side bends make my waist wider?
Building the obliques with reasonable training volume is unlikely to noticeably widen the waist for most people — many lifters use lighter weight and higher reps here regardless, more out of preference than necessity.
